Background on the Magnetic Sound Project
Magnetic Sound® is a growing collection of resonating sculptures designed to calm the mind. Created as technically-inclined conceptual artwork, the sculptures generate magnetic energy to induce vibrations in metal and wood, fusing traditional stringed instrument design with innovative technology to create tranquil soundscapes the world has never before experienced.
The project debuted in 2014 as a release from creative technologist MJ Caselden, and has appeared in retreat and hospitality spaces, museums, public spaces, and meditation centers in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Collaboration with renowned tech entities such as Intel supported the development of a series of custom versions of Magnetic Sound systems, and acquired works reside in collections and private properties as part of a growing legacy in design and sonic innovation.
Exhibition in Partnership with Aesop at the Miami Design District
This year, Magnetic Sound® will debut in partnership with Aesop® at Jade Alley in the Miami Design District. The new release, titled “Phoenix” (2020), is a 3-piece sonic sculpture intended to unify the public in moments of tranquility, awe, and contemplation.
The installation pioneers a new frontier in contemporary design, utilizing sound and natural acoustic vibration as integral design elements.
The compositions, written by the creator MJ Caselden, integrate elements of minimalist techno or electronica with stringed instruments to define a new genre of creative expression. Subtle influence from Eastern instrument traditions, a long-standing influence on the collection, are noticeable in both the form and the tones created by the artwork.
The title of this new release, “Phoenix” is a reference to the Ancient Greek motif: a bird which cyclically regenerates from fire and ashes. The artist views the creative process, and resultant offering to the public, as a means of finding positive trajectory amidst times of widespread hardship and tumultuous change.
